It's probably safe to say that everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives, but it's important not to let stress consume one's life or it can cause serious health problems.
In recognition of April as National Stress Relief Awareness Month, Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. has partnered with experts from Northwell Health Long Island Jewish Forest Hills for an interactive event that will teach attendees real life ways to manage stress, using simple techniques that can be repeated at home. They will also demonstrate ways to incorporate relaxation and humor into one's life and provide resources for those seeking extended treatment. There will even be fun stress-relieving device giveaways.
The event will be held from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Richmond Hill Block Association One Stop Center, located at 11008 Jamaica Avenue, Jamaica, NY 11418. The association is a co-sponsor, and the event will be incorporated into their monthly meeting, but it is open to the public. Everyone is invited to attend.
“Life can get complicated, stressful, and at times overwhelming,” Addabbo said. “You are not alone. We all deal with stress in our own ways, but sometimes there are better strategies, and that's what this event is about, learning how to manage stress in a healthy way before it gets out of control."
If stress becomes chronic, it can lead to health conditions like anxiety, depression, digestive problems, headaches, muscle tension and pain, heart disease, heart attack, high blood pressure and stroke, sleep problems, weight gain, and problems with memory and focus, according to the Mayo Clinic.
“We are grateful to Senator Addabbo's office for highlighting the importance of stress management in our community,” said Stancy Saji, Program Manager at Northwell LIJFH. “Jason Schaefer, MA, LMHC, CEAP, Senior Employee Assistance Program Advisor with the Northwell Employee & Family Assistance Program, and Tonya M. Lawrence, MSN, PhD, RN, CNM, NE-C, NPD-C, C-EFM, Director of Clinical Professional Development at Northwell Long Island Jewish Forest Hills (LIJFH), are honored to participate and share their clinical expertise and compassionate care. At Northwell LIJFH, we're proud to support events that prioritize wellness and empower our neighbors with tools for healthier living.”
