Join Flatbush DSA Socialist Night School for an author visit with Alex Vitale, author of The of of Policing. This highly influential book makes the argument that the problem with policing is not training, diversity, or methods, but policing itself. At this session, we will discuss how this argument connects to current issues around policing, Mayor Mamdani's proposed Department of Community Safety, and DSA's orientation to these.
Alex Vitale is Professor of Sociology and Coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College and a Visiting Professor at London Southbank University. He has spent the last thirty years writing about policing and consults both police departments and human rights organizations internationally. His essays have appeared in the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, Nation, Jacobin, Fortune, and USA Today. He has also appeared on CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, NPR, PBS, Democracy Now!, Vice News, and the Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
At Socialist Night School reading discussions, all are encouraged to attend, whether you have done all, some, or none of the reading, and whether you have attended many prior meetings, or whether this is your first time.
Please RSVP so hosts can anticipate turnout and communicate with attendees.
