Immigrant communities are under attack in NY and across the country. President Trump is spending $171 billion to build an ICE army to terrorize immigrants, Black and Brown people, and allies. They are kidnapping children and families, murdering people in detention and in the streets, and attempting to intimidate immigrants and people of color out of public space. This is a time for action and resistance.
In New York, we are still mourning the death of Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a near-blind, non-English-speaking refugee from Myanmar, who died after he was dropped by immigration agents miles away from his home in freezing temperatures. Mr. Shah Alam ended up in U.S. Customs and Border Patrol custody after he got lost on a walk in a neighbor's yard and the Buffalo police were called. New York for All would stop local and state agencies from collaborating with ICE. It would have have prevented the Buffalo police from colluding with immigration enforcement.
Immigrant detention is also exploding in our state. The first nine months of 2025 saw 6x more people held in detention in New York county jails than all of 2024. We must end the practice of caging immigrants and ensure no one is profiting off the misery and suffering caused by detention. The Dignity Not Detention Act would prohibit these contracts and get New York out of the business of immigrant detention.
There is no excuse for the our state legislature to not do everything in its power to stand up, affirm our values, and protect New Yorkers. Passing New York for All and Dignity Not Detention is the floor, not the ceiling, and we demand the state legislature does so now. There is no time to wait.
