At our March Staten Island DSA General Assembly, we’ll open with a discussion on the missile strikes on Iran by the United States and Israel. As threats of a widening war, sanctions, and regional destabilization intensify, we’ll build an anti-imperialist analysis of U.S. foreign policy together. What are the stakes for working people here and abroad? How do militarism and empire intersect with austerity and repression at home? And what is our responsibility as socialists in the imperial core to oppose war and stand in solidarity with ordinary people in Iran and across the region?
From there, we’ll turn to the growing statewide fight to tax the rich. Our members recently traveled to Albany for a day of advocacy, meeting with legislators and pushing for bold redistributive policies that make the ultra-wealthy and corporations pay their fair share. We’ll debrief from that trip and discuss next steps in the campaign.
We’ll also examine a recent proposal from DSA-elected State Senator Kristen Gonzalez to grant the Mayor of New York City the power to raise corporate taxes by twenty-five percent. Could this strategy succeed? How might our local state elected officials respond and how can we organize to push them toward backing progressive taxation policies that fund housing, healthcare, transit, and public goods?
Together, we’ll connect anti-imperialism and taxation into a shared strategy for building working-class power on Staten Island and across New York beyond any single campaign or news cycle. As always, our strength comes from showing up for one another and fighting to win together!
