This Night School session is the first of two about the book Family Abolition by M. E. O'Brien. Quoting from the book description, "For some of us, the family is a source of love and support. But for many
others, the family is a place of private horror, coercion and personal
domination. In capitalist society, the private family carries the
impossible demands of interpersonal care and social reproductive labor.
Can we imagine a different future?"
This session will discuss the Introduction and Parts I and II of the book, which cover the modern family as well as how the family has developed under racial capitalism. Part II also looks at historical challenges to traditional family structures, including those by Black and queer liberation struggles.
In the next session, we will be joined by the author for a discussion about the book in its entirety, focusing on Part 3 about the future of the family and alternative care structures.
