While leading Suffragists Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Sojourner Truth were commemorated in 2020 with New York City's first statue of historical women, they were by no means the city's only Suffrage advocates. From teachers and writers to doctors and lawyers — and preachers and labor leaders to actresses and activists — this is the story of New York's role in the Women's Suffrage Movement, and the women from every borough and background who helped change the world.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the people, places, and events that defined the Women's Suffrage Movement within New York City.
Led by writer, historian, and New York City tour guide Lucie Levine, our virtual experience on the Centennial of the 19th Amendment will include:
-The origins of New York’s Suffragists , who advocated on the national, state, and NYC borough level
-How New Yorkers organized the first Women’s Suffrage parades
-Why the Brooklyn Bridge is a feminist landmark , and how eating lunch became a major feminist statement
-The Suffrage history behind noted NYC locales such as the Statue of Liberty and Carnegie Hall and the New School
-Details surrounding the Suffrage statue in Central Park dedicated in 2020
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Lucie — any and all questions about the Women's Suffrage Movement in NYC are welcomed and encouraged!
