Reason Speakeasy: John Tomasi & Matt Zwolinski on the Libertarian Movement

Reason and Nick Gillespie

Date: Apr 03rd

The Reason Speakeasy is a monthly, unscripted conversation with outspoken defenders of free thinking and heterodoxy. It doubles as a live taping of The Reason Interview podcast and always provides a great evening of camaraderie and conversation about cutting-edge topics and ideas.

This time, Nick Gillespie is talking with University of San Diego philosopher Matt Zwolinski and Heterodox Academy’s President John Tomasi about their new book The Individualists: Radicals, Reactionaries, and the Struggle for the Soul of Libertarianism. This volume dives deep into longstanding divisions among anarchists, minarchists, Hayekians, Randians, Rothbardians, and others who define what it means be libertarian.

Nick loved the book so much that he blurbed it, calling it “the definitive intellectual history of a movement that is the unacknowledged motive force behind much of postwar American politics and culture. Zwolinski and Tomasi provide an indispensable guide to libertarian ideas and an invaluable map to the movement--and thus, the country, if not the globe--is likely to head over the next generation.”

Ticket includes buffet with beer, wine, soda, and appetizers and snacks—and plenty of time to talk about novels, free expression, and anything else on your mind.
